Myopia Management
Slowing down short-sightedness in children with Ortho-K, myopia control lenses and regular clinical review — in Fernvale, minutes from Sengkang and Punggol.
What is myopia management?
Myopia — short-sightedness — happens when the eye grows slightly too long, so distant objects blur while close work stays clear. Ordinary spectacles correct that blur, but they do nothing to change how quickly the eye keeps growing. Myopia management is different: it is a set of clinical treatments designed to slow the rate of progression, so a child finishes growing with a lower prescription than they otherwise would have.
This matters because myopia is not only an inconvenience. Higher prescriptions are associated with a greater lifetime risk of retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, early cataract and glaucoma. Every dioptre of progression we prevent in childhood reduces that risk in adulthood. Singapore has one of the highest rates of childhood myopia in the world, and the combination of long study hours and limited outdoor time makes proactive management especially worthwhile here.
Who is it for?
Myopia management is aimed primarily at children and teenagers whose prescriptions are still changing. It is worth booking a consultation if any of the following sound familiar:
- Your child's prescription has increased noticeably at their last one or two eye tests.
- Your child became short-sighted at a young age — early onset usually means faster progression.
- Both parents are short-sighted, which raises the likelihood your child will be too.
- Your child spends long hours on near work and relatively little time outdoors.
- Your child has been squinting, sitting close to screens, or complaining of headaches after school.
We also see children who are not yet myopic but sit in a high-risk group. In those cases, a baseline measurement and periodic monitoring is often the most useful step — see our children's eye care page for what a first eye test involves.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
Ortho-K is one of the most effective options we offer. These are rigid, highly oxygen-permeable lenses worn overnight. While your child sleeps, the lens gently reshapes the front surface of the cornea. In the morning the lenses come out and, for most of the day, your child sees clearly without any glasses or contact lenses at all.
Two things make Ortho-K popular with families. The first is freedom: no glasses sliding down during PE, swimming or CCA, which is a genuine relief for active children. The second is the clinical evidence — overnight orthokeratology has been shown in multiple studies to slow the elongation of the eye, typically reducing progression meaningfully compared with ordinary single-vision glasses.
The effect is reversible. If your child stops wearing the lenses, the cornea gradually returns to its original shape over a few days, and vision returns to what it was. Fitting is measurement-driven: we map the curvature of the cornea, select a lens design from that map, then verify the fit on the eye before your child takes lenses home. Handling, insertion, removal and cleaning are taught in person, to both parent and child, until everyone is confident.
Other options we fit
Ortho-K is not the only route, and it is not right for every child. We also fit myopia control spectacle lenses, which look like ordinary glasses but use a treatment zone across the lens surface to signal the eye to slow its growth. They are a good fit for younger children, for families who prefer to avoid contact lenses, or as a starting point before considering lens wear. Soft daily disposable myopia control contact lenses are another option — convenient, hygienic, and useful for children who want lens freedom during the day but are not suited to overnight wear. Where appropriate, we will also discuss atropine therapy in coordination with an ophthalmologist.
Alongside any treatment, we talk through the habits that genuinely help: roughly two hours of outdoor time a day, a sensible working distance for reading and devices, good lighting, and regular breaks from sustained near work.
The consultation process
A myopia management consultation takes about an hour. We start with a full refraction to establish the current prescription accurately, then assess eye health, binocular vision and how the two eyes work together. We measure corneal curvature and take the baseline readings we will track over time, so future visits compare against real numbers rather than impressions.
We then sit down with you and explain what we found in plain language: the current prescription, how quickly it appears to be changing, and the realistic options. You will hear the trade-offs of each — cost, daily routine, handling, expected outcome — before you decide anything. If you choose to proceed, we order or fit lenses, teach the care routine, and schedule follow-ups. Reviews are typically at one week, one month, and then every three to six months to check that the eyes are healthy and that progression is under control.
Why early intervention matters
Myopia progresses fastest in the primary school years and generally stabilises in the late teens or early twenties. That means the window in which management makes the biggest difference is relatively short, and it closes quietly. A year of waiting is a year of growth you cannot get back. Starting earlier does not just slow the current rate — it lowers the final prescription your child carries for life.
